White on White

Concrete painted white is not
white as snow, but off-
white, that is, of a certain
whiteness: snow is as bleach makes
white clothes look whiter though not,
and here the drifts are whittled
by wind to shapes perfect as
white is by the absence of texture
and shadow: that is white, the lack
of variation or mood: true
white is never difficult but lies there
at night but slightly, though
the moon with its typical theatric-
al light makes it glisten like a dead lake;
a continual jostling of this quietness
speckles the air, pales bodies
white as the drowned at lake-bottom.
